When you come in for this appointment, you will meet with Dr. Lissa Bootstaylor or one of our plastic surgery consultants and express your goals for the surgery. She will answer any questions you may have, examine your breasts, and ask you some questions regarding your medical history. It is very important to be open and honest with Dr. Lissa when having this conversation as it will help prevent any unnecessary risks.
This portion of the consultation is what most patients consider to be the most fun part. The two of you will talk about the options we offer when it comes to the implant, the cup size you are looking to have, and the overall shape. Once you make your final choices, Dr. Lissa will create your customized surgical plan. Before the surgery takes place, Dr. Bootstaylor and the patient will discuss objectives, the best implant to use, and where to make the incision. Implants vary by filler and size and will be based on the patient’s breast anatomy, body type, and desired increase in size. Incisions can be made where the chest meets the breast, around the areola, in the armpit, or in the navel.
Working through the incision, the patient’s breast tissue will be lifted to create a pocket, and then the chosen implant will be positioned within this pocket. The surgery is typically completed in one to two hours and is done under general anesthesia.
After your surgery, we will wrap your breasts with a gauze dressing, along with a surgical bra, to help reduce swelling. We will keep you for a few hours post-surgery to monitor you, but once Dr. Lissa feels comfortable with releasing you, you will be free to leave and rest comfortably in your own home. We strongly recommend having a family member or friend available to provide you with a ride home, and even monitor you for a few hours after surgery, as you may be sore and still influenced by the anesthesia. Dr. Lissa will prescribe antibiotics that will help avoid infection and some temporary pain medication to alleviate any post-op pain. You will also be provided with instructions that will make your recovery the most successful.
You will need to wear a support bra for at least four or five weeks around the clock. Swelling, bruising, and numbness, particularly around the incision, are normal and generally subside over about six weeks, but can vary from patient to patient. You should rest for the first few days and avoid any strenuous activities for four to six weeks, or until Dr. Lissa says it’s okay. Most patients return to work in seven to ten days but must initially avoid any heavy lifting.
