Orbera® Weight Loss

What is the Orbera weight-loss system?

The Orbera weight-loss system is a complete, yearlong program that can help you lose weight. This FDA-approved gastric balloon and weight-loss plan can help you lose up to three times more weight than diet and exercise alone*, and you won’t need to undergo surgery.

The balloon is about the size of a grapefruit when it’s filled with saline. It takes up space in your stomach so you feel full, reducing the amount of food you can eat. Many adults lose 40-60 pounds in their first six months with the Orbera balloon.

The gastroenterologist places the balloon orally through your esophagus in a quick in-office procedure. The Orbera balloon stays in your stomach for the first six months of your yearlong weight-loss program.

During this time, you’re in close contact with the medical support team at Body Esthetics who help you change your nutritional habits and adjust to feeling fuller faster.

After the gastroenterologist removes your gastric balloon, you continue to work closely with the support team, following a specialized diet and exercise program.

What can I expect during the Orbera nonsurgical procedure?

The whole process takes about 20 minutes. First, the gastroenterologist at Body Esthetics performs a diagnostic endoscopy to ensure your safety. You’ll be mildly sedated during the procedure, so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort.

Your gastroenterologist inserts the deflated Orbera balloon through your mouth and esophagus into your stomach. Once in place, they use a special syringe to fill the balloon with a sterile saline solution. You can go home the same day, after a short recovery period.

What happens to the balloon after six months?

After six months with the Orbera balloon, during which you learn to adjust your eating and exercise habits — a lifestyle transformation — your gastroenterologist removes the balloon nonsurgically, the same way it was inserted.

Your medical, emotional, and fitness support continues after removing the balloon so you can stay on your path to success and achieve your desired weight-loss and health goals.

Am I a good candidate for the Orbera weight-loss system?

If you’re an adult with a body mass index (BMI) of 30-40 and you’re willing to commit to a 12-month, medically supervised nutrition and exercise plan, you may be an ideal candidate for the Orbera system.

Dr. Bootstaylor and Dr. Kaila also utilize the balloon to better the outcome of plastic surgery procedures.

If you’ve tried to lose weight with other programs, but haven’t attained your goal, Orbera may help. Dr. Bootstaylor or Dr. Kaila conduct a thorough evaluation of your medical history and your overall health so they can determine if the Orbera system is right for you.
