What is a Breast Lift?
Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure designed to raise and reshape sagging breasts. The procedure positions the breasts higher up on the chest, with nipples pointing outward instead of downward. Some patients choose to have the size of their areola reduced and implants inserted during their mastopexy.
Why consider a Breast Lift?
For many women, pregnancy, nursing and age can cause breasts to lose their shape, fullness, and elasticity, causing them to look prematurely aged. A breast lift procedure will help to restore firmness to your breasts, rejuvenating your entire appearance as well as your self-esteem.
Who is a good candidate for a Breast Lift?
Although breasts of any size can be lifted, typically the best results are achieved in women with small, sagging breasts. If you are in overall good health, but your breasts appear sagging and elongated with nipples pointing downward, you may indeed be an excellent candidate for a breast lift. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Bootstaylor to determine whether a breast lift is the most suitable procedure for you.
Dr. Bootstaylor performs surgical procedures at Emory University Hospital Midtown and Northside Hospital.
How is the procedure performed?
A breast lift usually takes one and a half to three and a half hours and is done under general anesthesia. The most common procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision following the contour of the breast. The incision outlines the area from which breast skin will be removed and defines the new higher location for the nipple. The skin surrounding the areola is brought down and together to lift and reshape the breast. Stitches are made around the areola in a vertical line downward from the nipple area and along the crease of the breast. If you’re having an implant inserted along with your breast lift, it will be placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue or deeper under the muscle of the chest wall.
Will a Breast Lift make my breasts look fuller?
If you want to increase the size, volume and fullness of your breasts as well as firmness, it may be recommended to combine a breast lift procedure with breast augmentation to create a fuller, firmer bust line. Dr. Bootstaylor will help you choose the most attractive breast implants to complement your breast lift procedure.
How long does it take to heal after a Breast Lift?
Healing is a gradual process. Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions for resuming your normal activities. Although you may be up and about in a day or two, you shouldn’t plan on returning to work for a week or more, depending on how you feel. You should also avoid lifting anything over your head for three to four weeks. If you have any unusual symptoms, don’t hesitate to call your surgeon.
Will I be able to breastfeed after a Breast Lift?
Yes. It is absolutely safe to breastfeed after a breast lift procedure; however, we recommend that women hold off on having a breast lift until they are finished with pregnancy and lactation because future pregnancy and lactation may affect the outcome of your breast lift.
