Eliminate bulges and bumps that detract from your appearance in your favorite clothing. Body contouring procedures can help you achieve the tone and definition that diet and exercise alone cannot produce. In Georgia, our office, led by plastic surgeon Dr. Lisa Bootstaylor, provides liposuction and other body contouring procedures for residents in the metro Atlanta area and surrounding communities in Georgia.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a safe and time-tested procedure that sculpts the body by extracting fat from problem areas, such as the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, back, and neck. Although liposuction is a substitute for dieting and exercise, liposuction can remove stubborn areas of fat that don’t respond to traditional weight-loss methods.
What does Liposuction do?
Liposuction uses vacuum extraction to eliminate fat from stubborn areas, producing a tighter and more defined facial and body contour. Liposuction is used to effectively treat almost any part of the body, but the most popular areas treated are the following:
- Abdomen
- Ankles
- Arms
- Back
- Buttocks
- Chest
- Face
- Flanks
- Knees
- Legs
- Neck
- Thighs
How is Liposuction performed?
How is Liposuction performed?
There are several liposuction techniques that can make the procedure easier and enhance the outcome. The time required to perform liposuction varies depending on the size of the area, the amount of fat being removed, the type of anesthesia, and the technique used. Liposuction removes localized deposits of fat to recontour one or more areas of the body.
Through a tiny incision, a narrow tube is inserted and used to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. The tube is moved through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and suctioning them out. If many sites are being treated, your surgeon then moves on to the next area, working to keep the incisions as inconspicuous as possible.
For some men and women, the option of “awake liposuction,” or tumescent liposuction, may be ideal. Instead of general anesthesia, Dr. Bootstaylor uses a local anesthetic during your liposuction procedure so you’re awake the whole time, but won’t feel any pain.
Dr. Bootstaylor performs surgical procedures at Emory University Hospital Midtown and Northside Hospital.
Will Liposuction help me lose weight?
Liposuction is not a weight loss treatment, although it does achieve a slimmer looking and tighter body contour. Liposuction is recommended for patients who are close to their ideal weight and maintain healthy active lifestyles with a healthy diet. Patients who have more than 30 pounds to lose are advised to hold off on liposuction until after weight loss is completed and use it to treat the last stubborn fatty deposits that often linger in problem areas, in spite of proper diet and exercise.
What are my risks?
Though liposuction is normally safe, complications can and do occur. Risks increase if a greater number of areas are treated at the same time, or if the operative sites are larger in size. Removal of a large amount of fat and fluid may require longer operating times than may be required for smaller operations.
How quickly will I heal after Liposuction?
Don’t expect to look or feel great right after surgery. Even though the newer techniques reduce some post-operative discomforts, you may still experience some pain, burning, swelling, bleeding and temporary numbness. Pain can be controlled with medications prescribed by Dr. Bootstaylor, though you may still feel stiff and sore for a few days. Healing is a gradual process. You’ll be encouraged to start walking as soon as possible to reduce swelling and help prevent blood clots. You’ll begin to feel better after about a week or two, and you should be back at work within a few days following your surgery. The stitches are removed or dissolve within the first week to 10 days.
