One of the most common plastic surgeries in the world is otoplasty, a surgery that corrects the size, shape, and position of the ears. Otoplasty may be performed on children and adolescents who are teased about their ears, as well as adults who are unhappy with their ears. The most common reason that Dr. Bootstaylor recommends otoplasty to patients is to help with ears that stand too far away from the head. Our Otoplasty Before and After images show examples of this, as well as cases where the ear shape and size were not in proportion with the person’s head. Children may undergo ear surgery between four and 14 years old, as this is when the ears are fully developed. Adults can have the surgery at any time.
General anesthesia is typically recommended for ear surgery, especially in younger patients who may move during the procedure. The incisions are made behind the ear and possibly around the front of the ear to provide access to the cartilage. Dr. Bootstaylor shapes and removes cartilage and skin to achieve the desired improvement. As shown in our Otoplasty Before and After Pictures, each otoplasty procedure is tailored to the patient based on the desired outcome of the surgery.
